Calling all Barbie collectors! Mattel has released a new Filipina-inspired Barbie for its Styled by Design Series, just in time for Filipino American History Month.

The toy company gave a closer look at the doll through its Instagram account as it wears a corset with large traditional terno sleeves, a malong-inspired skirt, and a pair of bakya with bahay kubo-sculpted heels.

Her look is elevated by a radiant crown depicting the Philippine sun, elegant gold janggay jewelry, and some intricate batok tattoos on her arms.

Barbie's new look was crafted by Filipino-American designer Carlyle Nuera, who is a Lead Designer at Barbie Signature.

According to the Mattel Creations website, Nuera aimed to elevate "traditional Filipino fashion into the realm of haute couture, paying homage to his Asian American heritage with this spectacular Barbie doll."

"Inspired by his heritage and haute couture style in the Philippines, designer Carlyle Nuera brings his cultural influences and artistry to life in spectacular fashion," Mattel stated.

Nuera said on Instagram that this Barbie is the "second coming" of his Mutya Barbie from 2015.

"If Mutya Barbie is the demure, responsible Ate[,] this new Barbie is the lil sis that always be galabanting (so, me lol). Ate Mutya Barbie even let lil sis borrow her jewelry; this new Barbie wears the exact same bracelet as Mutya Barbie!" he added.

The 2015 doll sported a long pink Filipiniana with a sheer overdress adorned with embroidered flowers and glittering gold jewelry. She also held a gold fan to match.

Priced at $100 (P5,732), the doll was made available Barbie Fan Club Members on Oct. 9, but was released to the general public on Oct. 10. The website noted that the item will be shipped on or before Dec. 20 this year.

The Styled by Design series celebrates the "personal and professional inspirations of Barbie Signature designers and creators" through premium design and high fashion aesthetic.

Big Brands Are Getting More Asian Endorsers In Southeast Asia

Asian Endorsers Are Now More Sought-After Than Western Celebs

Fair skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair—these were once the dominant standards of beauty in the Philippines. And it left those with morena skin, brown eyes, and dark hair feeling sidelined, despite these being the natural traits of many Filipinos. We can't deny it—people continue to buy into Western standards of beauty. It's promoted everywhere, from social media to billboards and magazines. But guess what? It seems like we're in a progressive era where beauty is no longer something the West gets to define for us. Instead, it's becoming something we're learning to embrace and redefine ourselves.

ICYMI, a recent report by Canvas8 titled "How are Southeast Asian shoppers changing luxury?" revealed a significant shift in the beauty landscape of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. Brands are now featuring individuals with Asian features, replacing the once-dominant Western celebrities. This shift reflects a growing appreciation for local beauty standards and a move toward more authentic representation in the region.

Why Brands Are Getting More Asian Endorsers In Southeast Asia

"For the past two decades, the Asian economy has been continuously growing. The Asian luxury consumer has become a powerhouse (in) purchase and spending," says Jose Legaspi, former marketing professor at De La Salle University and a contributor of the Canva8 report. "Top luxury brands are now focusing their marketing efforts to sign up Asian endorsers that represent their current biggest market," Jose added.

The faces of renowned Western luxury brands such as Lancome, Gucci, Dior, and Valentino now include Filipino stars like Kathryn Bernardo, Anne Curtis, and Heart Evangelista. This growing trend is no coincidence, as Southeast Asia has become a booming market for beauty and luxury products, with the rise of UHNWI (ultra-high net worth individuals with net worth of at least $30 million or around P1.7 billion).

The SEA luxury market is projected to generate $16.01 billion in 2024, up nearly $2 billion from the $14.38 billion earned in 2022. This growth is driven by a rising wealthy population, with Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia leading as the fastest-expanding UHNWI markets.

Notably, Asia's UHNWI demographic has an average age of 62.6 years, making it the youngest globally. Southeast Asia is also becoming a top destination for HNWI's from other countries, attracted by the region's lower cost of living and opportunities to maximize their wealth.

The Power of Asian Endorsers

To thrive in SEA's market, brands must grasp the consumer behaviors shaping the region. Younger shoppers are increasingly influenced by pop culture, with a substantial portion of their purchasing decisions swayed by celebrity endorsements. Asian stars, in particular, play a pivotal role in driving this trend, as their impact resonates profoundly with these youthful and aspirational consumers.

More than 82% of SEA shoppers have made purchases based on celebrity or influencer recommendations. K-pop enthusiasts are known to spend between $300 and $2,200 on merchandise, albums, and concert tickets. The report cited an example which is the BTS x McDonald's collaboration, which caused several branches in Indonesia to temporarily shut down due to overwhelming demand.

In the Philippines, brands like Bench and Penshoppe compete to secure endorsements from top Korean celebrities, offering fan meetings and exclusive merchandise to enhance fan engagement. Local celebrities are also gaining traction in endorsements like BINI, securing top brands like Jollibee and Shopee.

For Gen Z, luxury spending is often a form of self-expression and loyalty to their idols. Whether it’s Thai actors, Korean K-pop stars, or local SEA celebrities, these endorsements heavily influence purchasing decisions. Aside from that, consumers expect deeper cultural relevance with the brand.

Shining brightly on the global stage, Filipino American beauty Blessa Figueroa made an impression at the recently concluded Miss Asia Pacific International 2024 pageant, where she secured a commendable 3rd runner-up finish among over 30 contestants from around the world.

Representing Northern California during The Miss Philippines pageant, Figueroa’s performance showcased her grace, poise and deep connection to her heritage, earning her a place among the top five contenders in the pageant held in her home country.

During the evening gown competition, Figueroa captivated the audience in a red gown with a cape, designed by Rau Ablaza.

Taking to Instagram, she shared the significance of her attire that sealed the deal for her top five placement, stating, “Dressed in red, but carrying the colors of the world.”

Figueroa emphasized that the gown symbolized more than just elegance for her, embodying the true spirit of Miss Asia Pacific International.

“It’s a tribute to the strength found in being unapologetically yourself,” she wrote, celebrating how the pageant honors women who embrace their unique traits.

Through confidence, compassion and the power of individuality, Figueroa highlighted her commitment to inspiring positive change and advocating for diversity.

Figueroa aimed to bring the second Miss Asia Pacific International crown to the Philippines, a title first won by Sharifa Akeel in 2018. The last edition in 2019 saw Klyza Castro of the Philippines reach the Top 25.

Although Figueroa did not claim the crown, her powerful performance reinforced her role as an advocate for representation and diversity, particularly during the question-and-answer segment where she shared her experiences growing up in the diverse cultures of California and the Philippines.

She declared, “Wherever life takes me, I believe that what I keep in my heart is what takes me far, and that’s being a Filipina.”

The coveted Miss Asia Pacific International 2024 crown ultimately went to Janelis Leyba, a 20-year-old model from New York, making her the first American to win the title.

The top ranks also featured Karen Nunez of Mexico as first runner-up, Selena Ali of Belgium as second runner-up and Jennifer Prokop of Germany as fourth runner-up.

Surigaonon is first Filipino staff captain of Norwegian Cruise Line

Surigaonon is first Filipino staff captain of Norwegian Cruise Line

09 October 2024

ANEW milestone was celebrated by the Philippine manning sector in time with the observance of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (Manamo) when the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) appointed its first Filipino staff captain last September.

Ryan James Martinez from Surigao City was promoted last September 6 while working onboard Norwegian Gem, one of the Jewel-class ships of the world's fourth-largest cruise line companies.

NCL vessels are manned by crew and officers from C.F. Sharp Crew Management.

"My promotion felt like a natural progression. I started as a deck cadet and worked my way up through various ranks: ordinary seaman, able body, quartermaster, 2nd officer, 1st officer safety, 1st officer navigation, safety officer, chief officer, and now staff captain. I believe every seaman dreams of becoming a captain, and for me, it was just a matter of time," Martinez said.

A staff captain is the second in command of the Deck Department and works closely with the ship captain.

Martinez shared that his new responsibility includes maneuvering the ship in and out of ports.

"This can be challenging due to the size of the cruise ship and lack of tugboat assistance. I carefully plan each docking and undocking, considering wind and current factors while using the ship's propulsion," he shared.

Martinez also oversees safety and security onboard, ensuring all lifesaving equipment is operational and that crew conduct is appropriate. The key departments reporting to him include the Medical, HR, IT, Financial, Environmental, Bridge Navigation, and Deck Ratings teams.

While the job entails numerous responsibilities and tasks, the 46-year-old ship officer aced his duties following 26 years of experience on NCL vessels, thus demonstrating the Filipino seafarer's hallmarks of loyalty, diligence and professionalism.

"I've been sailing since December 1998, exclusively on cruise ships with Norwegian Cruise Line. I went straight from graduating from the University of Cebu to working for NCL," Martinez said.

"Every day brings new challenges, especially regarding safety and security compliance and managing daily issues with guests and crew," he said.

(SPOT.ph) Big day for alumni who are definitely going to brag about this news in batch group chats: Six Philippine universities have made it to the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings.

Ateneo de Manila University topped the list for the third time in a row, ranking 1001-1200 in a total of 2,092 universities from 115 countries and territories. Joining the Loyola School in this prestigious list are the usual "Big 4" schools—University of the Philippines (UP), De La Salle University (DLSU), and University of Santo Tomas (UST)—are also part of the roster. These rankings remain largely unchanged from the 2024 results.

But that's not all—Mapua University is back for the second time, while Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) has made a notable debut, becoming the first university outside Metro Manila to break into the list.

"We deliberately worked hard to be in the rankings. That’s why there were policy reforms done particularly in incentivizing faculty and students who published in Scopus-indexed journals," Chancellor Alizedney M. Ditucalan said.

This also makes MSU-IIT the youngest local university to be ranked in the global system.

  1. Ateneo de Manila: 1001-1200 bracket
  2. University of the Philipines: 1201-1500 bracket
  3. De La Salle University: 1501+ bracket
  4. Mapua University: 1501+ bracket
  5. Mindanao State University: 1501+
  6. University of Santo Tomas: 1501+ bracket

THE is a UK-based group that ranks "research-intensive universities" across the globe based on teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Olivia Rodrigo's Manila concert is a success

Olivia Rodrigo’s First Philippine Show Proves She’s The Country’s New Pop Princess – Review

With the Philippine Leg of her GUTS World Tour, the Filipino-American pop sensation has solidified her status as one of the industry’s brightest acts of this generation.

Olivia Rodrigo is finally home.

Since the release of her smashing debut single “driver’s license,” the American pop star has always been vocal about her wish to visit and perform in her father’s home country of the Philippines. It’s a dream of hers that has been consistently mentioned throughout the rollout of her first album SOUR, its world tour, and even throughout her press run for her latest album, GUTS.

Yet in the time since then, Rodrigo has established herself as a world-renowned pop superstar, even earning accolades and acclaim left and right. Now bigger than ever, she has finally made it to Manila — bringing her GUTS World Tour to the country in a very special manner with this one-of-a-kind (and instantly sold-out) Silver Star showcase.

From what the audience of 55,000 people got to witness of the show, Rodrigo’s debut performance in the country was ultimately well worth the wait — for she didn’t merely put on one hell of a show, but she has also cemented her status as the Philippines’ bonafide pop princess.

Attendees of all ages and ethnicities made their way to the Philippine Arena as early as eight in the morning, with many of them queuing as early as they could for both the merchandise and standing lines. While a significant number of fans were decked out in their purchased tour-exclusive merchandise, you could easily note the abundance of glittery star-shaped face stickers, purple, fur-lined cowboy hats, sparkly skirts, and Doc Martens boots that resembled Rodrigo’s very own tour outfits. As if that didn’t show their dedication enough, the sheer volume of screams as they entered the venue said more than words to their excitement for the show.

Given the massive size of the Philippine Arena, I don’t think the place has ever been louder than it was last weekend. The moment that the lights went out, the frenetic energy reached its fever pitch as the visuals of Rodrigo on screen made for a seamless (and cinematic) introduction to her on-stage appearance. With the first few riffs of the rousing rock anthem “bad idea right?” ringing across the arena, it further turned up the volume on what was already a loud affair among the thousands of Livies in attendance.

The energy continued its momentum as she sang “ballad of a homeschooled girl,” which brought out the angsty nature of both the pre-teens and middle-aged fans (like myself) screaming their heart out to the track, almost as if it were a catharsis of sorts to each and every one of them. And with Rodrigo leading the pack, her infectious nature further motivated the audience to thrash their heads as if we were living vicariously in a rock show.

Exasperated by the audience’s response, the 21-year-old pop star took some time to take a breather and to thank the audience for their response to her tracks. “Salamat po,” she exclaimed — to which everyone responded with a loud set of cheers. After asking the crowd how they were doing for the night, she proceeded to perform her chart-topping single, “vampire.”

The beloved opera-rock number began with its emotional piano-laden opening, with Rodrigo conveying the emotional weight of the track’s lyricism. Her performative touch was indicative of her theatrical background, and it accurately translated the simultaneous display of anger and despair, especially by the point wherein the track transcended toward its climactic and memorable bridge.

Continuing the emotional run of the show, the pop superstar continued with her lovelorn set of hits from SOUR, “traitor” and “driver’s license,” which enraptured audiences with their somber yet catchy hooks that that were presented with such fervor. As we relived Rodrigo’s heartbreak through her devastating performances, nothing prepared us for what else was to come next with her performance to GUTS’ album closer, “teenage dream.”

“I wrote this song a few days before I turned nineteen. But with where I am now [at 21 years old], I don’t think I’ve ever been happier in my life,” she says. Taking to the piano at the center of the stage, she delivered a profound performance that perfectly encapsulated the growing pains that come with the price of fame and encroaching adulthood. With her lovely vocal performance backed by a video montage of herself as a child, it further amplified the wave of nostalgia and depth that made for one of the most poignant moments of the show.

To liven up the mood following her performance, she performed the empowering “pretty isn’t pretty” and the anthemic “love is embarrassing” to get people dancing on their feet. With additional on-stage choreography featuring Rodrigo’s talented backup dancers, each set of performances added that little oomph that made these B-side tracks shine even further in the live setting. And with what the pop star was able to demonstrate in those two tracks alone, it was even more evident that she was born to be a performer.

The melancholic “making the bed” saw Rodrigo lay on her back at the foot of the stage, with the camera and LED screen solely focused on her as she sang her heart out. With the lights dimming for a few moments past the performance, the pop hitmaker was escorted towards a special platform near the tech booth, wherein she made her way up a floating crescent moon that circled the entirety of the upper section of the arena to perform the conflicted ballad, “logical.”

Taking the sights from her point of view, Rodrigo enthusiastically addressed the audience by giving a whole speech about how excited she was to be here in the country. “I can’t believe I’m here in the Philippines. I’ve been wanting to go [here] my whole life, and i can’t thank you guys for welcoming me. This is such a dream come true,” she exclaimed.

“Tonight’s also extra special because I believe this is the biggest show I’ve ever played in my entire life. I’m seeing more people than I’ve ever seen, and I’m so, so grateful. Tonight is extra special because the proceeds of this show go to this incredible charity called Jhpiego, which provides medical services to women and girls right here in the Philippines.  I’m very happy about that and so excited to announce that,” the pop superstar continued.

“Tonight really is a night to remember — but mostly I’d just like to thank you guys. I really can’t believe it. Thank you so much for showing up, buying a ticket, putting on a purple outfit, and singing all the lyrics. This is such a dream come true, I can’t tell you [enough]. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

As she continued her set, she played a heartfelt rendition of what she described as “her personal favorite track off of SOUR” — “enough for you.” With the moon floating across various corners of the arena, Rodrigo took time to greet fans from all these sections, holding back her tears as she gave it her all for her performance of the track. The wave of lights from the entirety of the venue became a sea of stars that complemented her very own crescent moon. It was truly a moment to behold — marking an emotional chapter for the night’s festivities.

Rodrigo continued the show with strong performances to “lacy” and “so american” — even stating for the latter, “This is usually the part in the show where I say I’m so American, but tonight with you guys I’m so Filipino. My Tagalog isn’t so good but I’m working on it!” Her Filipino pride didn’t stop merely there, as she ended up being gifted with a special pageant sash by a fan that read out “Miss So Filipina” to the pop star’s delight.

Her live renditions to “jealousy, jealousy,” “happier,” and “favorite crime” were a little more stripped back than the rest of the setlist, with the latter two seeing her sit down with her guitarist, Dawn, who played acoustic guitar right beside Rodrigo. It was this part of the show that felt even more intimate than usual, almost as if Rodrigo was singing to the crowd by a campfire fire, whispering her innermost, confessional thoughts with anyone open to listening.

The chart-breaking favorite “deja vu” soon followed, bringing about an ambiance of nostalgia that the audience was loudly receptive to, especially by the earnest energy brought about by the track’s unforgettable bridge. Yet past the enthralling chants at the end, Rodrigo takes a contemplative turn with the slowed-down and somber nature of “the grudge.” Weaving across such emotions could often take a drastic (if jarring) turn from most artists, but the manner in which the pop luminary executes it reflects a precision that feels perfectly apt to the entire flow of the show.

As the show went on, the next set of tracks sparked Rodrigo’s inner rock star, with the thrill of “brutal,” “obsessed,” and “all-american bitch” flawlessly showcasing her contagious energy and immaculate stage presence. The dread of growing up into young adulthood was channeled onto “brutal” while the enthralling nature of “obsessed” was both (surprisingly) sensual and superb in its execution. Her rigor for “all-american bitch” was pitch-perfect as a moment of clearing one’s mind, especially at the point wherein she asked the audience to scream their hearts out.

“Okay, here’s the deal. I want you to think about something or someone that really pisses you off. And when the lights go down, you’re gonna scream as loud as you can and go all out,” she tells the crowd — to which it responds with an enrapturing set of shrills that was able to sum up everyone’s exorcism of frustrations.

With the concert coming to a close, Rodrigo came out dressed in a white tank top that proudly proclaimed “Pinoy Pride” which eventually built up the encore to the favored “good 4 u.” Together with everyone singing along to the track, she was building up the hype of the crowd while dancing around all corners of the stage, aiming to generate reactions from everyone in attendance.

Akin to leading a choir, it was obvious that by this point the relationship between the pop star and the 55,000 people present had become symbiotic at this point. Rodrigo was our fearless leader — while all the rest of us present were just swiftly following her lead (with credit to her impeccable tour de force persona.)

By the time we reached the final track of the show, the 21-year-old pop star posed with her iconic bullhorn, beginning what I believe to be one of her wittiest tracks to date, “get him back!” The energy within the entirety of the Philippine Arena had reached its fever pitch, with everyone simultaneously screaming and singing along to every lyric of the song. Admittedly, the venue was shaking at this point, which perfectly timed with the starbursts of confetti that were shot out at Rodrigo and her band echoed the song’s last few notes.

“Thank you so much, Manila. I will remember this night forever! Thank you, I love you, and good night!” she proudly proclaimed, blowing kisses to crowds all over the arena before descending the stage.

While she herself was no longer on stage, Rodrigo’s presence still lingered across the venue. The hype and momentum surrounding her performance was very much evident, and it left the audience still buzzing about what transpired just a few moments ago. Easily, this stop of the GUTS World Tour marks a historic moment in the pop superstar’s relatively young career, as it also solidifies her status as the youngest artist to sell out the full capacity of the Philippine Arena.

But even if we disregard the numbers and statistics surrounding this show, the performance itself speaks volumes about what this pop icon is capable of, even as she continues to further hone and evolve her craft over the next few years. What Rodrigo has displayed is an immense and natural display of superstardom, and we can only hope that we’ll get to see a lot more of this upon her return to the Philippines in the near future.

While this show may have been a dream of hers all those years ago, it’s also become a dream come true for all these fans who bore witness to this special showcase of a lifetime. For Olivia Rodrigo is more than just your usual pop star in the Philippines, but she has also become the country’s very own pop princess.

Though she may continue to make her moves on the global stage, what we’ve seen from this Silver Star show has already won the eternal hearts and following of millions of fans nationwide. With credit to what took place over the past weekend, the Filipino-American pop sensation has solidified her status as one of the music industry’s brightest acts of this generation.

Following this show, Olivia Rodrigo herself has surely become the pride and joy of the Philippines — with her audience here forever ready to welcome her back home.

Tagalog language to be offered at Yale University

Tagalog course to be offered at Yale University in 2025

The Filipino Times

07 October 2024

Students at Yale University will soon be learning Tagalog, as the Ivy League school will offer the course in the fall of next year.

As Tagalog is the fourth most-spoken language in the US, there has been a strong desire among Filipino students at the university for a Tagalog/ Filipino program that would provide them with course credits. Previously, Yale had students study Tagalog by pairing them with native speakers, but no credits were given for that.

And so, driven by this frustration, a Filipino student organization named “Kasama” filed a petition to have Tagalog as one of the university’s international language course offerings. Their efforts paid off, with over 380 students and faculty members signing the group’s petition, according to a report by ABS-CBN News.

Now, the search is on for Yale’s full-time Tagalog instructor, who will be responsible for teaching elementary and intermediate courses focused on reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Filipino or Tagalog.

The college daily newspaper Yale Daily News said whoever secures the position will be appointed for three years, with the possibility of renewal.

They will also teach six courses each year and collaborate with other educators of Southeast Asian languages to enhance their study programs.

This decision by Yale follows Harvard University’s introduction of its first Tagalog course in March 2023.

MANILA, Philippines — Angeles City in Pampanga, the birthplace of Filipino favorite sisig, was recognized as “Asia’s best emerging culinary city destination” for 2024 by the World Culinary Awards 2024.

Angeles City bested nominees for the said award such as Hanoi in Vietnam, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Kyoto in Japan and Taipei in Taiwan.

The “Asia’s best emerging culinary city destination” award conferred on Angeles City “underscores the exceptional talent, creativity and dedication of its local chefs and food artisans,” said Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco.

“The city’s rich culinary heritage, led by its iconic dishes like sisig, continues to captivate food enthusiasts not only in the Philippines but across the world, showcasing the power of Filipino cuisine on the global stage,” she added.

She also said the efforts of the local government unit of Angeles City, particularly enacting an ordinance that declared “sisig babi” or pork sisig as an “intangible heritage,” helped “preserve and promote the city’s culinary legacy,” resulting in the award.

DOT’s Central Luzon regional director Richard Daenos accepted the award on behalf of Angeles City during the gala ceremony of the World Culinary Awards 2024 held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Oct. 3.

The World Culinary Awards is part of the World Travel Awards that bestowed many recognitions on the Philippines in the past.

Meanwhile, DOT’s attached agency Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) was hailed as “best national tourism organization in Asia” at the 33rd Annual TTG Travel Awards in Bangkok, Thailand on Sept. 26.

Before the award, the TPB promoted the Philippines as a destination of choice for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions through the “MICE Philippines: We Take Your Business to Heart program” at the Incentive Travel & Conventions Meetings Asia from Sept. 24 to 26.

The presentation resulted in generation of P1.7 billion worth of initial sales leads, said Frasco.
